If you look at medieval villages the first building was always the pub. The peasants needed a place to hang out and drink on feast days and complain about their lousy existence. Moving forward to the industrial revolution, bars kept the men sane after working 12 hour days 6 days a week. Old west towns ALWAYS had the town saloon for drinking and paid female company. In the US we saw what a mess we created when we outlawed alcohol.
I wrote my dissertation primarily at two bars. Does that count? 😅
Close enough for me.
