As a kid the future was the twenty first century and there was even a Saturday morning show extolling the cool technology to come. I remember the 1968 Auto Show in Detroit where they demonstrated a picture phone. It took longer than expected and never really happened with landlines, but now it’s a reality with Apple FaceTime.

Yes, we dreamed of flying cars and I remember watching demonstrations of jet packs at local fairs, though these never became the household reality we thought was coming. Flying cars do exist today as do jet packs but these are more toys for wealthy individuals and daredevils than serious transportation.

We never dreamed of the Internet or social media or electronic medical records along with cloning and other modern medical miracles. The future is something we all envision differently and we never get it quite right.

Thanks for a nostalgic trip to the past and another look ahead.

I'm sure people of a certain age (I was Class of '01, first of the New Millennium,) will remember the Aussie show "Beyond 2000," that ran on the Discovery Channel. (Heck, remember when Discovery was good, for that matter. 🤭)

And don't forget Conan O'Brien's "In the Year 2000" segments. (Where's thar 🔦? )
